Interstate Park

Interstate is Wisconsin’s oldest state park, established in 1900. Located along the picturesque St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the park provides scenic views of the river and the steep-sided gorge known as the Dalles of the St. Croix. The Ice Age Interpretive Center features a film, photographs, murals and information about Wisconsin’s glacial history.

Interstate Park was established in 1900, making it the oldest state park in Wisconsin. At about 1,300 acres, the park offers many recreational opportunities for everyone. There are over nine miles of summer hiking trails and an additional nine miles of winter trails. There are also eighty-two campsites, picnic shelters, and a swimming beach. The St. Croix River and Lake o’ the Dalles provide opportunities to canoe, kayak, and fish.

On the bluffs above the pituresque basalt gorge of the St. Croix River, you will find the western terminus of the Ice Age Trail, a 1,200 mile trail that winds through the state of Wisconsin, roughly following the extent of the last glacier to cover Wisconsin. Within the park, you can also find three State Natural Areas, special areas that protect outstanding examples of Wisconsin’s native landscape of natural communities, significant geological formations and archeological sites.

Be sure to check out the Ice Age Center (pictured below). Here you will find the Glacier’s Gifts Gift Shop, a museum with Ice Age related exhibits, an auditorium with a flim on the last ice age, and an educational classroom.

A Wisconsin Park sticker is required for Interstate Park. You can buy them online or at any Wisconsin State Park.
