Horizon Rock Shelter Renovation Celebration!

The Friends of Interstate and Straight Lake State Parks invite you to celebrate the restoration of the Horizon Rock Shelter!
July 8th from 5:00-7:00 pm
Guided Hikes to the Shelter with Refreshments and Snacks at the Ice Age Center.
The historic Horizon Rock Shelter was built in 1939 with members of the CCC camp using their expert rock work to build the stone structure and available wood to roof the structure. For years it was a favorite place of many hikers as people frequented the shelter for picnics and special occasions including weddings. In 2022 tragedy struck when there was a fire at the structure that destroyed the roof and left the rocks tarnished. Although the cause was never determined so many people expressed interest in restoring the structure. With estimates for repair being double of what the insurance would pay, the Friends decided to raise the money to restore the structure. In 2024 we launched the Give Big Campaign and our generous donors stepped up and between donations that year and money the Friends raise through wood and merchandise sales we were able to match the money needed for the restoration. In 2025 bids were awarded to Lift Bridge Builders who began the work in August of 2025 along with Cox Masonry. They were guided to use techniques to restore the structure to the original historic nature and were able to complete the project in time for 125th Celebration on September 20, 2025. We want to celebrate this great accomplishment with the builders, state and local officials, and our generous donors. Please join the Staff and Friends Board Members on Wednesday, July 8th from 5-7 for our celebration including snacks and refreshments.
A vehicle pass is required for entrance into the park.
