It’s celebration time!!!  Horizon Rock shelter renovations are completed Thanks to support from Friends of Interstate and Straight Lake State Parks, community businesses, Give big donations  and individual donors

On July 8, 2026 the friends, WI DNR Park staff, and community members celebrated the completion of the renovations with a ribbon cutting ceremony and comments by Janet Hutchins, DNR Parks and Recreation Specialist; Matt Densow, Interstate and Straight Lake Parks Superintendent; and Carol Wickboldt, Friends of Interstate Park board member.

The shelter was originally built in 1939 by members of the CCC Camp stationed at Interstate Park-St. Croix Falls. The significant damage to the shelter was repaired with authentic logs, cement and cedar roofing in 2005 by the Lift Bridge Builders-Rick Venzina.

Following the ceremony supporters gathered at the Ice Age Center for a wide selection of delicious appetizers and a beautiful cake commemorating the completion of the project along with time to visit with friends. Many people enjoyed participating in the guided hikes to the shelter that were provided by members of the Friends Group.

Interstate Park staff, Friends Group and other supporters are proud to be able to share this beautiful building with the many visitors who come to the park and hike the Horizon Rock Trail.
